Mr. Goodyear's Neighborhood - Trina Taylor, Prevent Child Abuse Utah
Wednesday Nov 05, 2014
Wednesday Nov 05, 2014
Child abuse is a difficult topic, but it needs to be addressed, especially here in Utah where we rank 8th in the nation for substantiated child abuse cases in the nation. Just in Utah, that equates to about 12,000 child abuse cases a year affecting 1 in 5 boys and 1 in 3 girls between the ages of 6-11. Child abuse affects us all in some way, either personally or economically. Prevention is the key and in this episode of Mr. Goodyear’s Neighborhood, the executive director of Prevent Child Abuse Utah (Ogden Chapter), Trina Taylor, discusses how we can all take charge and help prevent child abuse. At the time of this interview, professional runner and Prevent Child Abuse ambassador, Chad Weller, was also scheduled to sit down with us but was delayed in Denver while in route from Miami to Utah. Chad eventually made it to Ogden before competing in the North Face Challenge 50 mile Ultra Marathon in Park City on October 4th. While in Ogden, a small group of us took Chad on a tune-up run along the Bonneville shoreline trail where we intersected with many local runners who were very friendly and patient as I introduced Chad to everybody I knew on the trail – you know who you are, thank you for being so friendly and hospitable. We hope you enjoy the show, for more information on Prevent Child Abuse Utah please visit www.preventchildabuseutah.org

Mr. Goodyear's Neighborhood - Wasatch Front 100 Organizers
Thursday Oct 30, 2014
Thursday Oct 30, 2014
The Wasatch Front 100 Endurance Run has been ‘running’ since 1980, making it the oldest continuous 100 mile race in the country. ‘Wasatch,’ as the race is affectionately known, has spawned trail runners all over Ogden, as they train for arguably the toughest 100 mile event in the world. It was an honor for John and Brandon from the Banyan Collective to sit down with Wasatch organizers John Grobben, Steve Baugh and Phil Lowry and speak with them about the early days of Wasatch and how the race has evolved over the years to become the Wasatch 100 we know and love today. You know what; you’re going to learn the Wasatch 100 is not that different today than it was 35 years ago. In this special episode of Mr. Goodyear’s Neighborhood, we discuss with John, Steve and Phil how Wasatch has remained true to its origins and continues to be one of the premier trail running events on the race calendar.

Monday Oct 13, 2014
Monday Oct 13, 2014
We learned in the first minute of sitting down with Keith from Wasatch Brewery that one of their beers won an award at the Great American Beer Festival. With 5,000 to 6,000 beers in a category, for a Utah beer to win is a huge accomplishment. Keith explains, "Burning down that fence of Utah not having great beer."Check out the full interview recorded live at the 2014 Snowbasin Beer Festival!

Interview: Tom Kiely - XTERRA CEO
Friday Sep 19, 2014
Friday Sep 19, 2014
When XTERRA first came to Snowbasin, I thought, wow, this is a big deal. I had seen XTERRA on TV and of course heard of the Nissan vehicle, and really wanted to own one. I never thought I'd get the opportunity to sit down and share a beer with the head cheese who invented the brand in 1996 and remains the CEO today. Tom Kiely tells us how XTERRA began and how Ironman nearly beat him to the punch. He also chats about the move to Ogden and how well received the off-road triathlon is by our mountain town. Thanks Tom for hanging out with us at Slackwater Pizzeria on the Ogden Outdoor Adventure Show! Check out the interview here:

We've been following Austin for the last couple years and his growth in the sport of bouldering and speed climbing is not just respectful, but darn right crazy inspirational. He's only been climbing 4 years and he's qualified for World's!! Congrat's Austin! Ogden Outdoor Adventure Show 174 - Trail Mixer
Monday Sep 01, 2014
Monday Sep 01, 2014
Access to miles of scenic well-kept trails minutes from downtown Ogden takes a team of dedicated individuals to maintain. Weber Pathways is a non-profit organization dedicated to planning, promoting, constructing and protecting Weber County non-motorized trails. We are committed to the idea that non-motorized network of public pathways significantly contribute to our community’s economic vitality and quality of life. - weberpathways.comClinking of glasses and the pitter-patter of late summer rain welcomed this year's annual Weber Pathways Trail Mixer at Snowbasin Resort. Attendees were greeted by Weber State Cheerleaders doing stunts in exchange for raffle tickets, tables of outdoor gear for the live and silent auctions, and live music. The fundraiser sold out raising a significant amount of money to help build and maintain local trails. The who's who of Ogden were in attendance and many sat down with us as we recorded the Ogden Outdoor Adventure Show LIVE in Earl's Lodge. Todd to the Top and myself pulled podcast duty while John Wojciechowski gathered influential personalities like Weber Pathways Executive Director Mark Benigni, Chair Greg Scothern, Outreach Coordinator Rod Kramer, and Board of Trustees Member Mark Bunker. Weber Pathways Chair - Greg ScothernWeber Pathways Board Member - Mark BunkerWeber Pathways Outreach Coordinator - Rod Kramer The Goal Foundation's Jenny Scothern joined us to chat about the upcoming USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships in Ogden September 3rd - 7th. Chris Zimmerman, Executive Director of the Weber School District Foundation and the evenings auctioneer invited everyone to the Christmas Tree Jubilee which raises funds to enhance Weber County education. Future standup paddling pro, and Roosters Brewing Co. proprietor, Kym Buttschardt, spoke to us briefly about inspiring a paddling nation. GOAL Foundation - Jenny ScothernWeber School District Foundation - Chris ZimmermanRoosters Brewing Co. - Kym ButtschardtOgden's Mayor, Mike Caldwell and his wife Cathrina (also a future standup paddling pro) also sat down with us. The Mayor who was a Weber Pathways board member for seven years displayed his passion for Ogden and the outdoor industry by reminding us that our little mountain town is home to 32 outdoor industry logos, over 2,000 outdoor industry employees, with over 400 full-time jobs in the bike industry alone. Home to 240 miles of trails and uncrowded 10,000+ skiable acres, Ogden is an outdoor enthusiasts dream base camp. The Caldwell's have adopted the Burch Creek Trail and as Cathrina explains, "people are pretty respectful" referring to trail upkeep and the lack of garbage on that particular trail. Weber Pathways exists to educate and inform others to help keep all our County trails in proper order. Sometimes it pays to listen to the OOA Show live. This week would be one of those weeks. For some unknown reason our podcast recording cut off after the first 10 minutes. Mr. Goodyear's Neighborhood - Tom Remkes
Tuesday Aug 12, 2014
Tuesday Aug 12, 2014
Tom Remkes:You may have heard tales of the legend of Tom Remkes and his feats of strength in the San Juan and Wasatch mountains, but like the Bear Lake Monster, the birth of Paul Bunyan and fur-bearing trout, you just don’t know what stories are real and which fall into the realm of myth. Well, we at the Banyan Collective were able to get the ultra-running hero himself into a chair at Weber State’s downtown bookstore and we pressed him about his career as a mountain runner, husband, mechanical engineer, woodworker and community activist with his service to the AutoLiv Race for Life.Although Tom prefers to live under the radar (no blog, Facebook or Twitter) and doesn’t volunteer any information about himself, we were able to validate his mythos at the Hardrock 100, HURT 100, Wasatch 100 and the Ogden Marathon. Tom also gave us the skinny on AutoLiv’s 24 year history with the Race for Life 5K where each year Tom and his team at AutoLiv are able to generate upwards of $24,000, benefiting local families in need as well as downtown Ogden’s shelter, The Lantern House. In fact, after you listen to Tom’s interview and have the insatiable need to shake his hand, Tom will be at the Ogden Striders tomorrow (August 13th) at 3:00pm to present checks to the 2014 beneficiaries of The Race for Life. Tom is an amazing person with a very humble personality, we are honored to call him a friend and Ogden is a better place because of his achievements and service to the community – Thank You, Tom!We hope you enjoy this episode of Mr. Goodyear’s Neighborhood, it’s one of our favorites. PS – Fur-bearing trout are real, I’ve seen the hairy fish before in the streams of Colorado along with UFO’s and baby elephants.

Ogden Outdoor Adventure Show 172 - Pepsi Invasion
Sunday Aug 03, 2014
Sunday Aug 03, 2014
Pepsi brought a new and exciting kind of fun to 25th Street this weekend. I posted my thoughts on my Facebook Page: "I didn't know there was a Grounds on 25th Street, we should come walk down here more often," - heard someone say while we were playing one of the Nurture the Creative Mind pianos. This is what I like about events like this. To me, the worth doesn't lie in a free concert or swag parade, but rather in giving people a reason to revisit H25, give local biz some love, and realize Ogden really is awesome! Thanks Pepsi!!" And, apparently two explanation points really drives home the message. Haha. It really was a good time and I'm sure businesses on Historic 25th enjoyed the added attention. Now on to our interview with Austin Hansel who is representing Ogden, Utah at the IFSC World Youth Climbing Championships soon in New Caledonia! Austin's and his Dad are already over $5,000 into this upcoming trip with airfare and lodging. Austin is working a 'real job' to help pay for his expenses, however any love our community would like to throw at him, I'm sure he and his father Lance would appreciate. Mr. Goodyear's Neighborhood - Bairgutsman Founder, Jan Cheney Part 2
Wednesday Jul 30, 2014
Wednesday Jul 30, 2014
Here it is! The
Banyan Collective is excited to present part 2 of our interview with the
original Utah mountain runner, Jan Cheney.
We concluded part 1 of our interview with Jan’s sad tale of
his almost guest appearance on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and continue
with Jan’s 29 mile tale of his then ‘Flight of the Eagle’ run, an ultra version
of the Bairgutsman, but now commonly known as the Wasatch 100 Endurance
Run. We’re also introduced to Richard
Barnum-Reece and learn how a litigious runner, who gets lost in Baer Canyon, is
the catalyst of the Bairgutsman deal Jan and Richard negotiate during the
inaugural running of the Wasatch 100 in 1980.
Even with threat of legal action, the Bairgutsman lived
under the direction of Richard Barnum-Reece, who affectionately renamed the race
after his late brother, Robert, also known as ‘Crazy Bob.’
Jan gives us the straight story on all the Bairgutsman
folklore and myths in addition to an inside perspective of the mind of Richard
Barnum-Reece. Everything you ever wanted
to know about the early history of the oldest mountain race in Utah is served
up by Jan, and we can’t thank him enough for his time and willingness to sit
down and talk to us. Thank you,
Jan!
Long live Crazy Bob’s Bairgutsman, Conquer Thyself!

Mr. Goodyear's Neighborhood - Bairgutsman Founder, Jan Cheney
Monday Jul 28, 2014
Monday Jul 28, 2014
The 40th edition of Crazy Bob’s BAIRGUTSMAN, the
oldest mountain run in Utah, is scheduled for this Saturday, August 2nd
in Fruit Heights at 6:00am. The
BAIRGUTSMAN has had an aura of badassdom for a long time with equal parts
mystery and urban myth. Well, as fate would have it, the creator of the
BAIRGUTSMAN waltzed into the loving hands of The Banyan Collective last Friday
and offered the keys to a long and storied event first known as the
Baer-Gutsman in 1974. Jan Cheney, a 1965 graduate of Davis High School and creator
of the Beehive Track Club, Molestus Half-Marathon and the Garden of Eden 10
miler, also gave life to the Baer-Gutsman after gazing at the ‘Balls’ on top of
Francis Peak during his commute to work every morning. The Gutsman course was established after Jan
and Howard Cheney (no relation) made a reconnaissance trip up Baer Canyon to
the top of Francis Peak. They had no
water or provisions, luckily the nice folks working at the radar towers offered
sandwiches and water. Jan and Howard had
such an epic adventure that day, they wanted to offer the same mountain
experience to the world.
The Banyan Collective is excited to offer this special
edition of Mr. Goodyear’s Neighborhood; we invite you listed to this 2-part interview
with Jan Cheney as he unloads some authentic Utah ‘running’ history staring
Chuck Smead, Rick Trujillo , Chick Hislop and Johnny Carson….whaaa? That’s right…heeeeere’s Johnny. Check it out, only on The Banyan
Collective!
